What began as a conversation between two community leaders quickly grew into a transformative experience for students and families across Middle Georgia.

When Dr. Darneisha Ivey approached Dr. Alexis Collier about hosting a back-to-school event at the TranMazon Center, the initial vision was straightforward. The goal was to provide basic school supplies to students who needed them. But through shared leadership, intentional planning, and the support of a powerful village, the idea evolved into something far more impactful.

The result was the First Annual Back-to-School Bash, a full-day event rooted in dignity, service, and collective care.

Impact and Participation

More than 150 students attended the event, leaving with more than just supplies. They received essential tools, confidence, and a renewed sense of belonging as they prepared for the upcoming school year.

Throughout the day, participating students were offered:

  • Free professional haircuts and/or retwists

  • Backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies

  • Hygiene kits with everyday essentials

  • Snacks and refreshments provided by local vendors and sponsors

This event was not just a giveaway. It was an intentional act of love, designed to ensure that every child walked into the school year feeling prepared, supported, and seen.

Acknowledging Key Contributors

This event would not have been possible without the time, energy, and resources of our committed partners.

Individual and Organizational Contributors:

  • Courtney Clarke, who coordinated event sponsors and organized Pre-K bookbags

  • Troy’s Snack Shack (Montezuma), which provided backpacks and snacks

  • Forever Thankful Barbershop (Quez the Barber), which offered complimentary haircuts

  • Aisha Carr, who delivered professional sisterlocks services

  • Peachy Locs (Perry, GA), who provided free retwists with care

  • CARRY, the nonprofit partner that assembled and distributed hygiene kits

Each contribution played a vital role in creating a seamless, welcoming experience for every family in attendance.

Thank You to Our Sponsors

We extend our most profound appreciation to the following sponsors who helped bring this vision to life:

  • Peachy Locs

  • Middle GA Trendsetters

  • Sea Shells Seafood Catering

  • S&K Catering

  • Bullard’s BBQ

  • Montezuma Health & Rehab

  • Won’t She Do It, Inc.

  • CARRY

  • TranMazon Center

These organizations stepped up to support Middle Georgia youth and families in tangible ways.

Media Coverage and Community Presence

The event was covered by the Macon County Newspaper, helping spread awareness of the initiative’s impact and reach.

We were also honored by a visit from Georgia gubernatorial candidate Olu Brown, who attended to observe and engage with families. This visit reflected an interest in community-driven efforts and did not constitute an endorsement.

Looking Ahead

The First Annual Back-to-School Bash has laid the groundwork for future efforts focused on youth, public health, and local collaboration.

The success of this year’s event confirmed what many already knew: when a community comes together with a shared purpose, the impact is lasting.

Planning for the next Bash is already underway, with goals to expand services, increase participation, and deepen partnerships.

“We wanted every child to walk away feeling cared for, uplifted, and ready,” said Dr. Collier. “This is just the beginning.”
